First 7 Days in Germany

Day 1: Stabilize & Secure Your Basics

Secure Your Address (Even Temporary)

Your address does not have to be permanent.
Even short-term accommodation is fine for the first days.

Get a Prepaid SIM Card

A prepaid SIM card can usually be activated without Anmeldung.
You only need a passport and a German address for identity verification.

What If There Are No Appointments Available?

• Check the website early in the morning
• Refresh frequently (new slots appear)
• Some cities offer limited walk-in hours
• Always check your city’s official website

Day 2 : Prepare Administrative Essentials

Tax ID (Steuer-ID)

You do not apply for a Tax ID manually.
After completing your Anmeldung, your Tax ID will be sent automatically by post within 1–3 weeks.

Health Insurance Confirmation

Make sure your health insurance is active and that you have received the confirmation document required by your university.

Understand Your Tax ID

You do not need to apply for a Tax ID.
After completing Anmeldung, it will be sent automatically by post within 1–3 weeks.
If you haven’t received it:
• Make sure your name is clearly written on your mailbox
• Check that your address was correctly registered
If several weeks pass without receiving it, you can contact or visit your local Finanzamt with your Anmeldung confirmation and passport to request it again.

Confirm Insurance & Financial Setup

Before your university enrollment and residence permit steps, make sure:
• Your health insurance is active and confirmed
• Your blocked account is properly activated
• You have digital copies of key documents
Germany runs on paperwork. Being organized now will save you stress later.

Day 3–4 – Registration & Banking Setup

Complete Your Anmeldung

Attend your appointment with the required documents and keep your Meldebescheinigung carefully. This document is needed for many next steps.

Anmeldung TIP

Attend your appointment with:
• Passport
• Rental contract
• Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation)
After registration, you will receive your Meldebescheinigung — keep this document carefully. It is required for many next steps.

Bank Account TIP
